Our second week of Bible Study of
"The Rapture: Don't Be deceived" by Getalife Ministries (Billy Crone)

From a believers perspective what are some important aspects of the Rapture we should not forget:

Imminence – the knowledge that the rapture can occur at any time. We must be prepared.

What are the primary benefits to believers of the rapture:

>We will be given new bodies that are perfect.

(1 Corinthians 15: 50-54): Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does corruption inherit incorruption. Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed-- in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: "Death is swallowed up in victory."

>We will be given a new home in heaven.

(Revelation 21: 1-4): Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.  And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, "Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away."

>We will be given a new mission in running the Kingdom
>We will have a new relationship with Jesus Christ as we
are now able to fully see and know Him

Evil (as Satan/Anti-Christ) will be bound at end of Tribulation period to usher in the 1000 year reign (on earth) of Jesus.

Characteristics of the Millennial Kingdom:

>World government will be a theocracy with Jesus as King
>Disciples of Christ will have roles in administration
>Judges will be God-fearing and will apply God’s Laws
>There will be no more war
>There will be peace between Jerusalem and all other countries
>Jews/gentiles will be at peace/agreement with each other
>Wealth/abundance will be shared equally by all
>Weather will be perfect
>All work/effort will yield abundance
>Age will no longer be a factor as those not resurrected will live
       longer lives
>Human/animal relationships will change to reflect Garden of Eden

Heaven itself will respond and prepare the wedding feast of the church and Jesus (Revelation 19" 1-9).

THE RAPTURE IS ABOUT TO COME!

WHEN? What is the timing?

4 Views of when will the believers be leaving?

>PRE-trib (before)
>MID-trib (middle)
>POST-trib (after and just before second coming)
>At the establishment of the MILLENNIAL Kingdom

BUT What does the Bible Teach?

The evaluation of evidence and scripture suggests PRE-tribulation Rapture is most Biblical.

IMMINENCY is important as it gives us motivation to prepare for the Kingdom and His return.

More next week.

1 Thessalonians 4: 13-18

"But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.

For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.

For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words."

Some people do not believe in the rapture of the church. They believe in a general resurrection at the end of this age when the Lord will come to judge and set up His eternal kingdom.

One of their points is that the word "rapture" is not found in the Bible. I confess the word rapture is not found in the Bible but the words “caught up” are. Let’s examine this passage.

Those Who Are Sleeping: First of all, Paul removes our ignorance concerning those who are asleep.

This is a reference concerning the bodies of those saints who have died before the rapture. The church of Thessalonica was concerned about their dying loved ones. This passage answers that concern. The catching up of the church includes those who are dead in Christ who go first.

Those Who Are Saved: Second, he makes it clear as to the qualifying conditions of those who are caught up together.

Paul says, “For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.” Believing that Jesus died and rose again is the definition of the gospel (See 1 Corinthians 15: 1-4).

If they believed, they were saved, and are included in those that will be caught up. They will follow the dead in Christ in this event of the church.

Those Who Hear the Shout: Third, the catching up of the church will not take the living before the dead in Christ.

You will notice that the living, “shall be caught up together with them in the clouds and so shall we ever be with the Lord." This is a union that will never be broken: “And so shall we ever be with the Lord.”

(Please note nothing is said about this being “secret” or a special knowledge or handshake needed event. Jesus does not physically place a foot on the earth – thus this is not “His second coming event.” There will even be a shout and obviously people left behind will know it happened.)

Those Who Are Solaced: Fourth, this truth as presented by Paul answers a lot of questions. He says, “wherefore comfort one another with these words.” Will we see our loved ones again? Yes, definitely; and this is a great comfort to those of us who have had loved ones from whom we have been separated by death.

The teaching of the second coming and the catching up of the church should be a great comfort to those who love the Lord.

Friends, clergy, and everyone else: The rapture of the church will definitely take place. Let’s comfort ourselves with this truth.

Monday, November 28, 2016

A few weeks ago a pastor I know casually asked me if I teach a "pre-trib" rapture (i.e. believers in Christ being taken away (snatched up) prior to the beginning of a seven year period of death, destruction, wrath, and woe at God's hands). He told me not to do it as it was bad theology.

Sorry folks - it's Biblical (the following is a quick overview of this teaching.

White Stone will be concentrating our teachings on this in order to better understand our world and the world to come.

What is the "Pre-tribulation" Rapture?

The rapture is an event that will take place sometime in the near future. Jesus will come in the air, catch up the Church from the earth, and then return to heaven with the Church. The Apostle Paul gave a clear description of the rapture event in his letters to the Thessalonians and Corinthians.

"For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words." (1 Thessalonians 4: 16-18).

"Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal [must] put on immortality." (1 Cor. 15: 51-53).

The timing of the rapture is not specifically known. From the Word of God and from sound reasoning--something Jesus used quite frequently--I hope to prove the reality of the pre-tribulation rapture.

The word "rapture" comes from Paul's "caught up" remark in verse 17. The words "caught up" are translated from the Greek word harpazo, which means "to carry off," "snatch up," or "grasp hastily." The translation from harpazo to "rapture" involved two steps: first, harpazo became the Latin word raptus; second, raptusb ecame the English word "rapture."

Scriptural Evidence for the Pretribulation Rapture <="" (rev.="" days="" 1260="" vs.="" 25:13)="" (mat.="" hour"="" the="" nor="" day="" neither="" know=""> The Unknown Hour

When we search the Scriptures and read the passages describing the Lord Jesus' return, we find verses that tell us we won't know the day and hour of that event. Matthew 25:13 says Jesus will return at an unknown time, while Revelation 12:6 indicates that the Jews will have to wait on the Lord 1,260 days, starting when the Antichrist stands in the Temple of God and declares himself to be God (2 Thes 2:4).

This event will take place at the mid-point of the seven-year tribulation (Dan 9:27).

Note that some people only see a three-and-a-half-year tribulation. In a way, they are correct because the first half of the tribulation will be relatively peaceful compared to the second half. Nonetheless, peaceful or not, there still remains a seven-year period called the tribulation.

When the Jews flee into the wilderness, they know that all they have to do is wait out those 1,260 days (Mat 24:16). There is no way to apply the phrase "neither the day nor the hour" to this situation. The only way for these two viewpoints to be true is to separate the two distinct events transpiring here: 1) the rapture of the Church, which comes before the tribulation; and 2) the return of Jesus to the earth, which takes place roughly seven years later.

The Marriage Supper of the Lamb
In Luke 12:36, the Word states that when Christ returns, He will be returning from a wedding. In Revelation 19:7-8, we read about the marriage itself. The marriage supper takes place before the marriage.

According to Jewish custom, the marriage contract, which often includes a dowry, is drawn up first. The contract parallels the act of faith we use when we trust Jesus to be our Savior. The dowry is His life, which was used to purchase us. When it's time for the wedding, the groom goes to the bride's house unannounced. She comes out to meet him, and then he takes her to his father's house.

This precisely correlates with the events according to the pre-trib scenario. Jesus, the Groom, comes down from heaven and calls up the Church, His Bride. After meeting in the air, He and His Bride return to His Father's house, heaven. The marriage supper itself will take place there, while down here on earth the final events of the tribulation will be playing out.

After the marriage supper of Jewish tradition, the bride and groom are presented to the world as man and wife. This corresponds to the time when Jesus returns to earth accompanied by an army "clothed in fine linen, white and clean" (Rev 19:14).

What They Didn't Teach You in History Class
Many groups try to discredit the pre-trib rapture by saying most of the end-time events in the Bible have already taken place. A group of people called preterists claims that the Book of Revelation was mostly fulfilled by 70 AD.

If the events described in the Book of Revelation took place in the past, I'm at a loss to explain some of the current situations I see around us: the rebirth of Israel, the reunification of Europe, the number of global wars that have occurred, and the development of nuclear weapons.

During history class, I must have slept through the part where the teacher talked about the time when a third of the trees were burned up, 100-pound hailstones fell from the sky, and the sea turned into blood (Rev 8:7-8, 16:21). I think several people would have to question their opposition to the pre-trib rapture doctrine if they knew that the evidence provided to them was based on the understanding that most tribulation prophecies have already occurred.

The People of the Millennium
If Christ were to come back after the tribulation, rapture all the saints, and slay all the ungodly, who would be left to populate the earth during the millennium? Only the pre-trib viewpoint can account for this post-trib problem. The Church is raptured before the tribulation, a vast number of souls are saved during this seven-year time frame, and those who make it through the tribulation go into the millennium while the unsaved are cast into hell.

The Saint U-Turn
In the pre-trib scenario, after we rise to meet the Lord in the air, we will go to heaven and abide there seven years. At the end of that period, Christ will come down to earth, defeat the Antichrist, and cleanse the temple.

In a post-trib rapture, we would rise in the air to meet the Lord, then do a 180-degree U-turn and come back down to earth. Revelation 1:7 states that Christ will appear out of the clouds and come down to earth. Zechariah 14:4 says that His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives. If He's already headed our way, why would we need to be caught up to meet Him?

"Come Up Hither"
Many pre-trib writers cite Revelation 4:1, which says, "come up hither," as a prophetic reference to the rapture of the Church, leaving Revelation chapters 1 through 3 as a description of the Church Age. After the shout to "come up hither," the Church is not mentioned in Scripture at all. The attention of Scripture switches from the Church to the Jews living in Israel.

Armies in Fine Linen
When Jesus returns (Rev. 19:18), an army follows Him. The army's members are riding on white horses, and they are clothed in fine linen that is white and clean. In Revelation 19:8, we are told that the fine linen is the righteousness of the saints (who accompany the “Man of Linen”). If the saints of God are returning with Christ to wage war on the Antichrist, then it is not possible to have a post-trib rapture without us running into ourselves as we are coming and going.

The Time of Jacob's Trouble
In several passages, the Bible refers to the tribulation as a time of trouble for the Jews. The phrase "Jacob's trouble" pertains to the descendants of Jacob. Jeremiah 30:7 says that this time of trouble will come just before the Lord returns to save His people.

The final week of Daniel's 70th week is yet to take place. An angel told Daniel that, "70 weeks are determined unto thy people" (Dan 9:24). Scripture never mentions that the tribulation is meant to be a time of testing for Christians.

However, some post-tribbers try to claim that they are the ones being tested during the tribulation. To make this so, they need to spiritualize the 144,000 Jewish believers in Revelation 7:2-8 who receive God's protective seal. Placing the Church dispensation into the same time frame as the seven-year Jewish dispensation, as the post-tribbers do, raises one good question: Can two dispensations transpire at the same time? In the past, God has only dealt with one at a time. Having both present during the tribulation would have to be an exception.

"He" That is Taken Out of the Way
Before the Antichrist can be revealed, Paul said a certain "He" must be taken out of the way. According to 2 Thessalonians 2:7, the "He" that must be removed is widely thought to be the Holy Spirit. It has been promised that the Holy Spirit would never leave the Church, and without the working of the Holy Spirit remaining on earth, no one could be saved during the tribulation. The removal of the Church, which is indwelt by the Holy Ghost, would seem the best explanation for this dilemma. The working of the Holy Spirit could go on during the tribulation, but His influence would be diminished because of the missing Church.

War or Rapture
(Rev 19:19-21) When Jesus returns at the end of the tribulation, He will be coming for battle. For those who believe in a post-trib rapture, it would be strange to meet your Lord and Savior just as He's rushing into battle. The idea that war and rapture could occur together is difficult to imagine, especially since they transpire at the same moment.

The Five Foolish Virgins
The wedding story that Jesus gave in Matthew 25:2-13, I believe, is a parable of the rapture of the Church. It explains how some will not be ready. Jesus clearly states that a group of people will miss out on an event, and will cry out to God to let them into the place where He resides, heaven. Although some try to put this parable in a post-trib context, it doesn't fit very well. The ones left behind in a post-trib rapture will not need to seek the Lord because they'll immediately be confronted by Him and His army of angels.

God Hath Not Appointed Us to Wrath
In 1 Thessalonians 5:9, Paul assures us that God has not appointed His people to wrath. This wrath is plainly God's anger that will be poured out during the tribulation. Pre-trib believers interpret this as meaning that Christians will be removed from the earth. Post-trib believers tell a different story. They describe this as meaning that God will protect Christians during the tribulation and pour this wrath out on the unbelievers only. This idea runs against the statement made in Revelation 13:7, in which the Antichrist is given power to make war with the saints and to overcome them.

A post-trib view would make God's promise of protection from wrath into a lie. In years past, it was possible to think of being protected from the guns and swords of that day. Today, when any major war would involve nuclear and chemical weapons, it's impossible to expect that same kind of protection. When Nagasaki, Japan was bombed during World War II, the bomb exploded over a Catholic church. Everyone who was in the center of the explosion died--both Christians and non-Christians. The only way to validly interpret God's promise of protection from wrath is by viewing 1 Thessalonians 5:9 as the bodily removal of the Church from this world.

The Salt of the Earth
Jesus said, "Ye are the salt of the earth" (Matthew 5:13). When the believers are supenly removed, the earth will be plunged into spiritual darkness. When this happens, the Antichrist will then be free to control the world.

God Takes an Inventory
In Revelation 7:3, an angel descends to earth and seals the servants of God. Two bits of information about this sealing highly disclaim a post-trib viewpoint. The first item is the number of people sealed: 144,000. The second one is that all those who are sealed are from the 12 tribes of Israel. For the events in Revelation 7:3-8 to be true in a post-trib interpretation, either the Church has turned against God or God has turned against the Church. A post-tribber could write a thousand-word commentary about why the Church doesn't need to be sealed. Instead of trying to argue about why the Church is not mentioned or sealed, a pre-trib proponent could just say, "We're already in heaven."

Noah and Lot as Examples
The tribulation period is compared to the times of Noah and Lot by Jesus in Luke 17:28. Most people argue over whether the time frame Jesus was talking about in that passage was pre-trib or post-trib. In doing so, they miss an important point. The two circumstances that the Noah and Lot situations have in common are the removal of the righteous and the judgment of the unbelievers. From these two accounts, we see that God prefers to remove His own when danger is involved…

Common-Sense Reasons for Believing in the Pretribulation Rapture

The World Test
One way to check the soundness of a doctrine is to see how the world reacts to it. One company put out a questionnaire that was used to screen prospective employees. One of the questions was, "Do you believe in the rapture?" If you answered "yes," your chances of getting hired would not be good. Some internet sites do not allow the topics of Rapture or Second Coming. They do allow topics such as sex, gays, and drugs. The only time the news media mentions the rapture is when someone sets a date and is proven to be wrong.

That Old-Time Religion
It used to be a rule of thumb that when one was visiting a church or listening to a preacher, one could assume the preacher believed in repentance, prayer, and the baptism of the Holy Ghost if he taught the rapture doctrine. It was also true that the churches on fire for God worshipped out of storefronts. Today, many of those storefront churches have moved into marble palaces and have strayed from their principal doctrines.

Birds of a Feather Flock Together
Whenever I look at all the groups that teach false doctrine and are highly focused on end-time events, I cannot find any that support the rapture theory. Some organizations, the Jehovah's Witnesses, for example, teach a false gospel and are heavily into Bible prophecy. Why, then, don't Jehovah's Witnesses teach a false doctrine that would be right up their alley? Could it be that the demonic forces that influence these groups know something that Christians opposed to the rapture don't know? The list of prophetically minded cults that reject the idea of a rapture goes on and on. Here are some more: the Mormons, the Worldwide Church of God and the Moonies, as well as leaders like Jim Jones and David Koresh.

The “True” Church Would Rebuke the Antichrist
If the Antichrist came to power with the Church still here, I do not see how he could operate. When Hitler was fighting to take over England, a number of Christians were praying for victory. Hitler made mistake after mistake, and England outperformed its enemy at every stage of the conflict. It is difficult to measure the impact of intercessory prayer in physical warfare.

Little is known of how great a role praying saints played in the defeat of Nazi Germany. If the Church were to reside on earth during the tribulation, I am sure she would give the Antichrist fits. In Revelation 11:3, the two witnesses alone give the Antichrist enough headaches. Millions of Christians who know their Bibles well would recognize the man of sin and pray fire down on his head. The post-trib view would have to plan on the Church just rolling over and playing dead the whole seven years…

We should all remember one thing: Knowing the Antichrist's mother's maiden name isn't the primary goal. Knowing Jesus Christ as your personal Savior and having your name written in the Lamb's Book of Life should be your number-one priority. The jailer asked Paul, "What must I do to be saved?" The answer was, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved" (Acts 16:30-31).

And God will take care of the rest.

Friends, it never ends...

the latest:

Pope Francis Extends Catholic Priests' Power to Forgive Abortion

Pope Francis has given all Roman Catholic priests an indefinite extension on their power to forgive abortion.
Francis, who has made a more inclusive and forgiving Roman Catholic Church a characteristic of his papacy, made the announcement in a document known as an "apostolic letter" after the Church's "Holy Year of Mercy" ended Sunday.
He said he wanted to "restate as firmly as I can that abortion is a grave sin, since it puts an end to an innocent life" but "there is no sin that God's mercy cannot reach and wipe away when it finds a repentant heart seeking to be reconciled with (God)".

That's what I'd call a false teaching ---- ONLY GOD THROUGH JESUS CHRIST forgives sins.

(Note: I wrote this on Tuesday before the outcome of the election)

Hard TIMES TO Come?
The Gospel - Luke 21: 5-19

An old woodsman gives this advice about catching a porcupine: "Watch for the slapping tail as you dash in and drop a large washtub over him. The washtub will give you something to sit on while you ponder your next move."

I can’t help but think that’s where we are right now in America. We have a porcupine trapped under a washtub and now we have to figure out what to do with it. No matter what we do somebody’s probably gonna get hurt.

Yet we know that our God does tomorrow really well so while we may care about what’s going on we know His will be done on earth as well as in heaven. We thank you Heavenly Father for those who consulted you and tried to discern your will in this election and our perilous times.

Now we settle in for the consequences. Listen to Luke 21: 5-19:

When some were speaking about the temple, how it was adorned with beautiful stones and gifts dedicated to God, Jesus said, "As for these things that you see, the days will come when not one stone will be left upon another; all will be thrown down."

They asked him, "Teacher, when will this be, and what will be the sign that this is about to take place?" And he said, "Beware that you are not led astray; for many will come in my name and say, `I am he!' and, `The time is near!' Do not go after them.

"When you hear of wars and insurrections, do not be terrified; for these things must take place first, but the end will not follow immediately." Then he said to them, "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and plagues; and there will be dreadful portents and great signs from heaven.

"But before all this occurs, they will arrest you and persecute you; they will hand you over to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors because of my name. This will give you an opportunity to testify.
So make up your minds not to prepare your defense in advance; for I will give you words and a wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to withstand or contradict. You will be betrayed even by parents and brothers, by relatives and friends; and they will put some of you to death.

You will be hated by all because of my name. But not a hair of your head will perish. By your endurance you will gain your souls."

Jesus is telling the Jews that their temple and culture will shortly be destroyed even though it seems impossible. The people will be persecuted, there will be dissention between families, friends, businesses, communities, and neighborhoods.

Hatred, animosity, fear, scorn, bullying, scoffers, political correctors, social justice warriors, political operatives, thieves, murderers, the low-life and connected ones will all ban together to heap ridicule on Christians, Christ, and our Creator.

The process may start slowly, but will build to an all-encompassing purpose/ mission of evil and its minions.

Lastly, in this passage, Jesus says that they are not to worry and not to prepare for He will be with them in eternity and will provide for their defense. Don’t sweat it and don’t worry about the porcupine under the basket – He’s got it.

This Gospel message comes just when we need it.

Yes I feel terrible that our country is failing, that we may never get our freedoms, and our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness here on earth again. (We are promised that in Heaven as God is righteous and just.)

America may be being set up to have every stone, monument, government building, and court house be thrown down with our population coming under the control of alien leadership and ideology. Our religious faith and the legal right to worship may be waning but it will not be forgotten and held hard to our hearts.

We must learn to stand and proclaim what we think is right, what we think is God’s Will. The Holy Spirit will supply us the words, deeds, and ability to persevere. Listen again to the last part of this passage:

So make up your minds not to prepare your defense in advance; for I will give you words and a wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to withstand or contradict. You will be betrayed even by parents and brothers, by relatives and friends; and they will put some of you to death.

You will be hated by all because of my name. But not a hair of your head will perish. By your endurance you will gain your souls."

Get over the idea that all you had to do was vote the right way and it’d be taking care of. We’re looking for volunteers to deal with that porcupine!

Amy Carmichael wrote this poem:

NO SCAR?
Hast thou no scar?
No hidden scar on foot, or side, or hand?

I hear thee sung as mighty in the land,
I hear them hail thy bright ascendant star,
Hast thou no scar?

Hast thou no wound?

Yet I was wounded by the archers, spend,
Leaned Me against a tree to die; and rent
By ravening beasts that compassed Me, I swooned:
Hast thou no wound?

No wound, no scar?

Yet, as the Master shall the servant be,
And, pierced are the feet that follow Me;
But thine are whole: can he have followed far
Who has no wounds nor scar?

AMEN.

Don’t Waste My Time
The Gospel - Luke 20: 27-38

Humans ask many dumb questions and seek out many trivial facts that a lot of time and effort is lost. Sometimes the more intelligent and learned you are the stupider the questions often become. That’s true in academia and it’s certainly true in those who become Bible scholars.

Sometimes pursuing trivial information is used to cover up or deflect away from real issues or questions people don’t want to answer or may even be malicious in nature.

Here are some trivial bits of info for you:

There are 49 different types of food mentioned in the Bible.

In the 1400’s a law was set forth in England that a man was allowed to beat his wife with a stick no thicker than his thumb. Hence we have “the rule of thumb”

Many years ago in Scotland , a new game was invented. It was ruled “Gentlemen Only…Ladies Forbidden”…and thus the word GOLF entered into the English language.

Did you know that Honey is the only food that doesn’t spoil.

Coca-Cola was originally green.

It is impossible to lick your elbow.

What is the largest amount of money in coins you can have without being able to make change for a dollar? Three quarters, four dimes, and four pennies, ($1.19).

There is a huge danger in wasting time seeking out trivia and theorizing what God means about certain things from God’s perspective. I think He certainly feels that way about denominational distinctions and those things that “shave” His words into mere word play and make them questions in a kind of eternal trivial debate.

Titus 3: 9 says “But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and strife and disputes about the Law, for they are unprofitable and worthless.”
There are other verses that warn about “useless words or facts.”

Ecclesiastes 6: 4 says, “for it comes in futility and goes into obscurity; and its name is covered in obscurity.”

Job 15: 3 suggests, "Should he argue with useless talk, Or with words which are not profitable?”

2 Peter 2: 18 states “For speaking out arrogant words of vanity they entice by fleshly desires, by sensuality, those who barely escape from the ones who live in error…” Given this thought listen to our Gospel Lesson from Luke 20: 27-38:

Some Sadducees, those who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus and asked him a question, "Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies, leaving a wife but no children, the man shall marry the widow and raise up children for his brother.

Now there were seven brothers; the first married, and died childless; then the second and the third married her, and so in the same way all seven died childless. Finally the woman also died. In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had married her."

Jesus said to them, "Those who belong to this age marry and are given in marriage; but those who are considered worthy of a place in that age and in the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage. Indeed they cannot die anymore, because they are like angels and are children of God, being children of the resurrection.

And the fact that the dead are raised Moses himself showed, in the story about the bush, where he speaks of the Lord as the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Now he is God not of the dead, but of the living; for to him all of them are alive."

Remember that the people who asked this question didn’t believe in resurrection and/or life after death. Therefore they didn’t really want an answer, perhaps they wanted to just shut Jesus up, shame him, or even suggest Jesus teach another subject.

Think for a second - Why would resurrection be so important to Pharisees, other Jews, but not the Sadducees?

Part of it concerns which books in the Bible were considered to be inspired by God.

The Sadducees worked only with the Pentateuch, the Torah (the 5 books attributed to Moses), while the Pharisees and others also added the Wisdom Literature (Prophets and Psalms) as scripture, and it was in those extra books that Pharisees found justification for trusting in a resurrection of the dead.

But this sounds too simply like a denominational fight, a tempest in a theological teapot, and therefore hardly worth anyone’s time to report in the Gospel of Luke.

But Jesus uses the question to add an important layer of understanding to our knowledge in reminding us of how His birth, life, death, and resurrection has changed things, and must change our view of God, Jesus, and eternity.

This trivial question actually went to the matter of ultimate justice in the world.

The Sadducees understood this world to be the only place in which God would act as a keeper of covenantal promises; Pharisees understood that God (the Creator of Heaven and Earth) would keep promises and enact justice even (maybe even particularly) beyond the boundaries of this world, beyond space and time.

That made it important in addressing a necessary thing because Rome quite clearly controlled the here and now one and was clearly not going to be paid back for its injustices here and now.

The terms of Jesus’ argument are worth a closer look. He has been handed a case involving the complexities of levirate marriage, that patriarchal institution that protected women by passing them from brother to brother.

(The law could become quite detailed and trivial in that teachers of it (Rabbi’s) would become necessary to sit around and ask themselves these kinds of questions even into our days.)

Jesus says that in the age to come, the age of resurrection and restitution, the whole institution of marriage will be unnecessary, and women will not be passed along as property. Why? Because, as Jesus says in Luke 20: 36, in that age, people “are not able to die.” Why would that matter?

It appears that Luke’s Jesus understands the age of resurrection and restitution to have set aside the entire patriarchal structure that makes the possessing of women as property possible because individuality has become the focus of salvation and eternity and not people groups, families, children, and nations.

His whole ministry, while upholding God and God’s law, also redefines and adds things that make it simpler to understand. His commands and commandments still stand as they continue to be human ideals but they also have the Messiah to deal with now as well.

Eternity will be a “self-identified” mass glorification of God, with many small parts coming together in a larger form of adoration and joy, if that makes sense.

Meanwhile here of earth we need to be reminded to not focus on human concepts and arguments that don’t matter in the long run.

“Remind them of these things, and solemnly charge them in the presence of God not to wrangle about words, which is useless and leads to the ruin of the hearers.” (2 Timothy 2: 14)

“For some men, straying from these things, have turned aside to fruitless discussion,” (1 Timothy 1: 6)

It’ll be a struggle but let’s focus on the important things and not get caught up in trivial or useless words. Remember that of the 800,000 words in the English language. 300,000 are technical terms. The average person knows 10,000 words and uses 5,000 in everyday speech. A writer generally knows approximately 15,000 and uses around 10,000.

Christians don’t need that many.

BUT how many angels can dance on the head of a pin?  Amen.
